We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
•
We had a wonderful three days at school this week with your children. On Monday, the 3/4/5day friends helped prepare our Thanksgiving feast before sitting down and celebrating as a group. Before enjoying the meal, they helped count and package up all of the food donations for the West Hartford Food Pantry. Thanks to all of your generosity, we collected 267 items!! We are so grateful for your help with our annual food drive.
•
The 2day friends spent yesterday baking pumpkin muffins and learning all about recipes. Mrs. Dolan showed them how to measure and stir and bake!! They all enjoyed the muffins during snack time. It was a rainy day but that didn’t stop the kiddos from splashing in the puddles and enjoying some time outside with their 4/5day counterparts.
•
We had a smaller crew on hand for Wednesday but we spent the morning learning all about Native American symbols and practiced writing them in their journals. Our Thanksgiving unit has been wonderful as always....so much to learn!
•
We hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and we cannot wait to see everyone’s smiling face on Monday!

On Monday and Tuesday, we welcomed the West Hartford Firefighters who taught the children all about fire safety. They tailored their visits to the specific ages so the children were able to understand what was being discussed and to learn to trust the firefighters.
•
The children all learned about the emergency number 9-1-1 and took turns practicing “dialing” it on a pretend keypad of numbers. They learned that 9-9-1 will not work. It has to be pressed in a very specific order. The firefighters then took some time to put on all of their safety gear to demonstrate to the children that even though they look different, they are still the firefighters and to not be afraid of them. The 3/4/5 day children each got to climb into the fire truck and look around while the 2day friends got to check out all of the gears and the truck. We are very grateful that they take the time each year to come and visit us and teach the children.
•
On Wednesday, we were so lucky to welcome Abby Nolin, mom to Piper and owner of Pop Yoga here in town. She conducted a fabulous yoga class with all 26 kiddos at one time. She based her program on the book “Room on the Broom” which all of the children loved. Everyone did such a great job!!!
•
And on Thursday and Friday, our beloved Miss Mallory enthralled the children with her amazing music abilities. It’s amazing to watch how the children have learned all of the songs and poems and can now sing them independently. We love hearing them sing the songs after Miss Mallory leaves for the day.

Good evening everyone! Pizza Week at Quaker Lane Good evening everyone!

Pizza Week at Quaker Lane was so much fun!!! It was not only delicious, but incredibly informative as well. We baked, conducted science experiments, read so many pizza books, learned pizza rhymes during music class, and of course enjoyed homemade pizzas by your little chefs.
•
Each group conducted science experiments which attempted to inflate a balloon using only yeast, sugar, and water. We then compared the speed of that inflation to that of mixing vinegar and baking soda together. Each mixture was poured into an empty water bottle. Be sure to ask your child which balloon inflated faster! We discussed the term “chemical reaction” and learned about what happens when you mix certain ingredients together. Sometimes there is a reaction and sometimes there isn’t. Please be sure to ask your child/ren what yeast likes to eat in order to make it grow.
•
Our resident chef and baker and teacher extraordinaire, Ms.Fox, made dough with all of the children which was used for baking rolls as well as for making the pizzas. Both classes donned chef hats and aprons and rolled, stretched, and decorated their pizzas however they wanted. Everyone enjoyed some delicious pizzas for a snack on Tuesday and Wednesday.
•
On Friday, the big kiddos then each created their own felt pizza game. It involved a lot of counting and can be used over and over again at home. Well done to everyone!
•
Ms.Fox’s 4/5 day class continues to watch their peas grow. They planted them a few weeks back and they are taking great care to water them and provide enough sunlight. We are hoping to plant them outside in our planter if it ever warms up!
•
Miss Mallory introduced a variety of new songs, rhymes, and games to the children in each class this week. They involved a ton of movement, singing, and lots of steps which the children mastered quickly and had so much fun with. We love the energy, creativity, and enthusiasm she brings each week!
•
This week it is all about rainbows and weather!
Week 2 of Dr. Seuss is now in the books. What did Week 2 of Dr. Seuss is now in the books.
What did we learn?
Let’s take a look.
•
We learned that Parker rhymes with marker,
And Trey rhymes with way,
Brooklyn rhymes with crooklin,
and Shaye rhymes with may.
•
Throughout these two weeks, we had a great time
Learning about rhythm, silly words, and rhyme
•
We figured since they can already spell RED,
Let them give it a try, maybe they can also spell BED.
•
“We can’t do it!” they said, we don’t know how to spell.
But all of a sudden, they were doing quite well!
•
They spelled moon and spoon and cat and sat,
And dish and fish, and rat and mat.
•
After a moment, the teachers all cried,
“We couldn’t be prouder, even if we tried!”
•
They spent the weeks rhyming whenever they could
It will help them start reading, it will do them all good.
•
We also had music, and played in the sun,
They were weeks filled with laughter, silliness, and fun.
•
For now we say bye to Whorton Hears a Who,
Sam I Am, The Cat, and Thing One and Thing Two.

Happy Monday! Last week, we had a great first we Happy Monday!

Last week, we had a great first week of our Dr. Seuss unit as we dove into his zany world of rhyming, nonsense words, and creative illustrations. The stories are long, short, nonsensical, and everywhere in between. But the underlying benefits of his genius helps lay down the foundation for beginning readers.
•
We were absolutely blown away by what good rhymers your children are! We spent the entire week rhyming at every possible moment. The children were able to come up with a rhyming word for their names and for every word we presented them. What good is rhyming you ask? It can benefit children with:
*language acquisition
*speech development
*building memory
*making predictions
*improving fluency
*phonemic awareness
•
We also worked with the 3/4/5day friends with basic word groups and spelling. We showed them the word ending of -AT. When we put an R in front of it, they first had to identify the letter and the sound it made. When they put the letter together with the ending, they realized they had a new word. We then replaced the R with a B, then an S, then a C, etc. They were stunned that they had instantly become readers. We did this with word endings such as -OG, -IT, -OON, -ISH, etc. Try it at home if you want to be super impressed 🙂
•
On Monday and Tuesday, all of the children created their own Cat in the Hat hats to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Although it may look like a simple nod to his most recognizable character, it’s actually a lesson in patterning as the students worked to create an AB pattern of red and white stripes.
•
On Wednesday, the 3/4/5day kiddos arrived decked out in their wackiest of outfits to honor Wacky Wednesday, one of Dr. Seuss’s books. The entire day was upside down and backwards and a lot of fun was had by all.
•
Angela’s 4/5day friends planted peas in egg cartons last week and have been watching them grow. It’s always amazing how quickly they sprout!
•
The week was rounded out by amazing music classes by Miss Mallory.
Thank you to all of the families that made this po Thank you to all of the families that made this possible!

We hope everyone had a great President’s Day/Feb We hope everyone had a great President’s Day/February Break!

We were all feeling the love last week as we celebrated Valentine’s Day with your kiddos! It is such a sweet holiday shared between them all. We loved watching them create their cards for each other, pretend to be mail carriers in our dramatic play area and deliver messages of love around the room, and proudly share their gifts with each other.
•
Tuesday’s surprise foot of snow created a lot of fun outdoor time for the bigger kids. They loved sledding down the hill and building snowmen. The 2day friends didn’t have time to play outside on Thursday due to our shortened week but perhaps next week will afford them the chance.
•
A huge thank you to everyone for baking sweet treats to share with our homeless neighbors. We collected so many items! Yesterday morning, Officer Jimmy Barrett and Footwear with Care organizer, Abby Moore, stopped by to thank the children and collect the items to distribute. They answered some questions from the children and shared their gratitude. I am so, so proud of our school community for all you do to help those in need. Great lessons indeed for our children.
•
Miss Mallory brought her three children to school yesterday to help out during music class and the students were treated to her daughter’s performance on the coronet. They love learning about new instruments and talk about how they too want to grow up and try new things like the coronet. We are so grateful for everything that Miss Mallory does for Quaker Lane. The children look forward to her visits every week. In fact, by 9:15am on Monday, I am asked repeatedly if she is coming that day 🙂
•
We cannot wait to see our 3day friends tomorrow!
Happy Sunday all! We had a fun week preparing fo Happy Sunday all!

We had a fun week preparing for our favorite February holiday....Valentine’s Day! The rooms are decked out in hearts and our dramatic play areas were turned into post offices where the children enjoyed writing letters to their friends and delivering them around the rooms. They all worked on making their own Valentine bags for collecting them next week from their buddies.
•
On Thursday and Friday, Miss Mallory created magical music classes for all. We enjoyed playing with a parachute, dancing, singing, and rhyming the days away.
•
In addition, the children enjoyed popping popcorn for their snacks. We used a hot air popper to make the popcorn and the joy and screams of delight it elicited were beyond funny. I hope you enjoy the pictures of them as they watched it pop. It provided a perfect opportunity for a little science lesson about how popcorn pops.
